On re-dreaming your life: Eyjafjallajokull

I’m in the pooh again. Along with everyone else living in rural Switerland.

Why?

The farmers have come out of hibernation and are spraying the stuff at us from all angles. Even though, only the other day, we were all given heaps of high quality fertilizer from Iceland. Absolutely free, without even lifting a finger.

I think its called obligatory abundance.

Actually they let the cows back out to play on the same day aeroplanes were allowed back in the skies above. So, after 6 glorious days of silence, suddenly the sounds we normally take for granted all arrived back on our doorstep in one jangled tangle.

To tune you in to my wavelength, I’ve made a recording for you. (See link on my previous post). Download it absolutely free and play it on your ipod or in your car so you can tune in to the pristine energies of the Swiss Alps. (A word of warning: Listen to it at your own risk! : )) You might start thinking like me!)

And run out into the street naked, like Archimedes, shouting ‘Eyjafjallajokull. Eyjafjallajokull.’

So what does Eyjafjallajokull have to do with re-dreaming your life?

And what does it mean anyway?

Eyjafjallajokull means no man is an island

It sounds a bit like ‘Eye-a-all-full-a-your-coal’

and that’s basically what it means.

Eyjafjallajokull is a wakeup call from Mother nature.

Not a war cry but a tiny burp. A polite hiccup. Just enough to shatter our rose-tinted illusions.

Of what?

Our illusion that we are separate islands.

Our illusion that we are in control

Our illusion of permanence. that things will and ought to stay the same.

Our illusion that we are not of this world or in it.

Eyjafjallajokull means embrace the paradox:

We are separate and one at the same time.

We’re in charge and we’re not.

Change is what this planet is all about.

Expect the unexpected.

Earth is evolving and taking us with her.

We’re becoming more sensitive to our connectedness.

Our thoughts influence our emotions and our emotions influence the entire collective field.

It’s your and my responsibility not to contaminate the collective field.

Or as Richard Moss puts it: “The most basic form of service you can do is take responsibility for your own mind.”

That may sound very well in theory but how about some practical tools?

How do we deal with negative feelings?

Here’s some of the best advice offered:

1. Guy Finely: Just don’t go there!

2. Use EFT tapping

3. USe Byron katie’s 4 questions.

4. Use Gratitude as a simple and effective tool. Richard Moss: Every negative thought (jealousy, anger, aggression, fear) is a measure of our distance away from the present. Gratitude is a way of coming back into now. Feel gratitude even though you don’t know why. Moss says, we can’t escape feeling fear and we’re not meant to. But we can choose not to make fear-driven choices.

5. Here’s a practicle from David Richo called “the two handed practice”:

“I can hold my fear in one hand and my commitment to no longer act in a fear-based way in the other”. Actually you can use this technique in any conflicting situation. Holding cupped hands out, palms upward. I hold my problem in the one hand and my power to work with it in the other. I hold my unloved situation and all the pain of it in the one hand and breathe into it and in the other my ability to rise above it.

You can do this with any marker in your hand. The positive and negative sides of what I call your inner friends. You hold the light side in one hand and the shadow in the other. Knowing you can always choose.

(Zen master Genpo Roshi uses a similar technique. Acknowledging and then synthesizing opposites. So does my hand analysis teacher, Richard Unger, which he calls the Goldilocks principle: Too much, too little , just right.

The” just right” state of any quality is what I call an “Inner Friend”. The too much or too little states ar your inner enemies.

I figured it out!

Heart + tiger
(The Year of the Tiger starting on Valentine’s day)
= having the courage to trust your heart
and let go.

You cant be all things to all people.
Just as you can’t have 6 sofas in your living room.

Thinking that God is outside you leads to listening to your head over your heart.
(Problem is, inner guidance often doesn’t make sense.)
So then you ask other people for advice, which then runs against your own inner guidance.

This is how you end up with 6 sofas in your living room
instead of one. ie. Clutter.

You don’t know why your inner guidance is sending you to the furniture shop.
It probably isn’t even to buy a sofa. Maybe its to meet someone or get the idea
to knock the wall down between your living room and kitchen.

If you don’t trust your inner guidance you’ll ask someone else if
they think now’s a good time to go to the furniture shop.
And then they’ll say, “Actually I have a sofa in my garage which
you can have for half price!”

And then your angels will roll their eyes and pull all the feathers out
of their wings and say, “See you in the next life time!”

A success story?
A good example is Sam Worthington, the Australian lead actor in Avatar.

He trusted his intuition to shut down his life and sell everything.
He had no idea why.
Next thing he knew, he was on a plane to Hollywood.

Can you say “I am God” without expecting a lightning bolt to strike you dead?
You need the courage of a tiger to do this.
Because actually you are. And the tiny voice in your heart is your umbilical chord
to “All that is.”

This is what the year of the tiger is all about. The courage to trust
your connectedness and let go.

On re-dreaming your life. Part 2. Living with joy

I’m back at my desk in Switzerland after my first real break in a long time.

My son and I had a wonderful holiday in the bushveld game tracking, river rafting and
catching up with family. We also managed to get down to Cape Town for New Year and
a quick swim in both oceans.

Now we’re back to minus 6 with snowflakes turning the world into a huge blank canvas as
a whole New Year stretches out at our feet, waiting to be filled with life and song.

Incredible to think that every single snowflake is unique.
Incredible too, that in the bushveld there are over 300 different types of birdsong.

Each species is beautiful and different and each has a unique role to play.
And, what I like most: each bird sings not because it has to, but because it wants to.

We humans tend to forget this simple fact.
Each of us has a unique song to offer the world.
And singing it is our greatest pleasure.

My question for you today:

What’s your song?

If you’re not sure, your joy can tell you.
Your joy is your inner guidance. Are you following it?

This sounds so easy and it can be. If it isn’t, your hands can help
you figure this out.

My wishes for you in the coming year:

May you live with joy.
May you find your voice.
And, may you be richly rewarded for sharing your song with the rest of us.

It’s my birthday today! Suddenly the sun is out covering the snow with diamonds.

I’m just back from a long walk following deer trails through the forest. Now I’m off to Zurich to paint with Margie.

On re-dreaming your life. Part 1. Celebrating today

I’ve just gone from wearing snowshoes in
Switzerland at a heart chilling -8 to barefoot
in the bushveld at a pulsating 38 degrees in the shade.
It’s glorious to be basking in the sunshine while
visiting my family in South Africa

But what has this to do with re-dreaming and celebration?

Winter solstice and year end are a double whammy
for going inward and reflecting on oneself and one’s
journey. Summer is about going out and taking action.

So maybe this is why you are actually getting this festive
message instead of me just wandering about in
snowshoes marveling at inner snowflakes.

2009 was a year of radical closure for me, probably you too.
I’m busy re-dreaming my life, with birdsong in my ears and
sunrise trying to paint moving clouds and life back into the lush greenery.

Driving up here through the night Mother Nature put on quite a show.
Hours and hours of flashes and crashes and electric veins dancing through cloud.
And then the smell of rain soaking into parched African soil.

Just goes to show. You don’t need to spend millions on fire crackers at New Year.
This is just the cherry on top. And added extra if it turns you on.

You already have front row seats twice a day to the greatest show on Earth.
Sunrise, sunset.
All you need to do is enjoy.

We are all so incredibly lucky to be here
With wind in our hair and birdsong in our ears.

Sea spray, snow flakes, a stranger’s smile?
A child’s hand in yours?

The miracle of being alive

Celebration is applied gratitude

Are you feeling isolated in Zurich or elsewhere?

Your hands are constantly responding to your thoughts and emotions.

This fact is extremely useful because often we aren’t in touch with our own deepest needs or feelings.

Your hands don’t lie, they simply reflect often unconscious truths.

For example, hold your hands up right now. Does your pinkie finger (also called Mercury finger in hand analysis jargon) stick out away from the rest of your hand?

If it does, this means you’re feeling isolated. The more it sticks out away from the other fingers, the more extreme this condition is.

Sometimes the little finger sticks so far out that it is no longer supported by the palm. This condition is called “falling into the ocean” because symbolically it represents a person toppling off the edge of a cliff.

If you’re a foreigner in Switzerland you might have this condition if you haven’t yet had time to learn the local language, if you aren’t working, or if you don’t have children to help connect you to others. Also, sometimes people feel like foreigners in their own land because they haven’t yet found a supportive group of friends who’re on the same wavelength as they are.

If you are feeling isolated in Zurich I recommend you check out ZIWA (Zurich international Women’s Association) or the American Women’s Club of Zurich or any one of the many clubs or associations in your area. Visit several til you find a group that resonates with you and your interests.

This Sunday 13 Sept, there’s a great opportunity to do just this at the Expa-Expo in Zurich.

I’m in the bush in Africa, beyond email internet and cell phone connections. Trying to spend quaility time with my mom and dad who live on a game farm and are in their 80s.

Their reserve is called Maduma Boma, these days run by my sister and brother in law.

Evey morning I go running in the warm bushveld sunrise with kudu, giraffe warthog and impala. It’s a magical place.

I’ve set aside one day for local hand reading all day tomorrow in Hoedspruit.

Johannesburg commitments are creeping up on me fast.

There’s a full day workshop on 31 May in Douglasdale.

And short and long consultations 1-3 June in Jhb.

I’m about to take a 2 week total break from the insanity
of the internet and email to spend quality time with friends
and family in South Africa.

If I post at all during this period it will probably be
to tell you about my mother’s garden pests: The giraffe stuck
in the swimming pool at midnight or the warthog eating her
precious lawn. Or perhaps the real life danger of a Mozambique
spitting cobra trying to eat baby paradise flycatchers.
